 1. What is the Gone for Good App?

Gone for Good is a smartphone app to make giving unwanted goods to charity shops effortless. We partner with charities that collect goods for free across the UK. The short video on our website gives a good explanation of how we work.

Our aim is to re-channel 6% of the saleable clothing and other items which currently end up in landfill.

If we can do that, charity shop income will double, helping their important causes.

We can also double the amount of stock, to do some good, for those who live below the poverty line that rely on charity shops for clothes, children’s toys, furniture and other items.

2. What kind of items can I donate via the App?

Most items can be donated via the app.  However there are several stipulations and we must stress that, depending on location, capacity and type of store, not all charities are able to accept all categories of donation:

All items must be legal to sell in the UK and not counterfeit.

3. Which Charities can I donate to?

We have many partnering charities; some are national and some are local but the choice of charities available to accept donations in each area differs.  When you use the app, it will only offer you a list of charities available in your area. For a full list of charities that partner with us please see the home page of our website.

4. How much do I need to donate?

Some charities have strict criteria about how many bags of clothing/items are being offered before they will send a vehicle out. This is because they at least need to cover the costs as well as raising money by selling the goods you are offering them.

So, the more you can offer, the more chance of your donation being accepted and collected.

For a rough indication of donation requirements for our larger charities, please see table below:

5. Can I sign up for Gift Aid?

Yes, if you are a tax payer, the app gives you the option to sign up for Gift Aid. Every donation you make via our app could be worth more to your chosen charity at no extra cost to you. For example, add Gift Aid to your donation and your bag could be worth £50 instead of £40.

6. Why do I need to take a photo of my items?

The reason we ask you to include photographs of the items to be donated, is so that the charity can get an idea of the quality and quantity of stuff to be collected. Ultimately, it helps them to decide whether it is worth their while sending out a vehicle and whether they will be able to sell your donation in their store.

You don’t need to include a photograph of every single item. A photo of everything spread out on the floor/bed is great. Or, individual photos of special items or items of high value are much appreciated.

For an upholstered piece of furniture, the charity needs a photo of the attached fire label before it can feel confident accepting it.

Please don’t let the photo requirement put you off donating via the app.  If you choose to send a photo of already bagged items that is fine but you stand a better chance of getting your donation accepted if the charity can see what you are donating.

If you include a photo, you also stand a better chance of winning ‘Donation of the Week’.

7. What happens if my selected charity doesn’t accept my donation?

If, for whatever reason, your selected charity doesn’t choose to accept your donation, it then gets offered out to other charities signed up within your area, on a first come, first served basis.

8. Why did my donation get rejected?

We set out to make it easy for people to donate goods to local charities that will collect them. We will not always be successful, but it will not stop us trying.

Some of the reasons why donations don’t get accepted are:

a) The donation isn’t of great enough value to a charity to warrant them sending out a vehicle.

b) Upholstered furniture cannot be accepted unless it has a fire label attached (photograph needed as proof)

 c) The items being offered up for donation are too damaged.

 d) The charity doesn’t have the capacity to collect or store donations at that point in time (For example during busy times such as Christmas)

9. How can I make sure my donation gets collected?

We cannot guarantee that your donation gets accepted, as that decision is up to your chosen charity.  However, to optimise your chances of getting it collected we recommend that you:

a) Make the quantity you have to donate as large as possible – see guidelines under question 4.

b)  Give a detailed list of items within your donation, in the Any Other Information section in the app. This gives the charity a clear idea of what you have to donate.

c) Take photographs that clearly show what you have to donate.
